Other information – This species can be found in the southern portion of Alabama. The plant is similar to others but can be identified by its habitat, pubescent-scabrous stems and inflorescence rays. The dense spikes with its reflexed spikelets are another good characteristic to look for.
The genus name Cyperus is from the Greek “cyper(us)” meaning “a rush or sedge.”
The species epithet is in honor of Leonard Plukenet (1641-1706). Plukenet was Royal Professor of Botany and gardener of Queen Mary. He was one of the first botanist to describe plants in North America. His four-part Phytographia (1691-1692) is one of the finest botanical publications to have been written.
