Other information – This attractive species is only found in a few Alabama counties and is fairly uncommon. The plant can be identified by its mostly glabrous stems and leaves, and the whorled appearance of its large upper leaves. The leaves have large, serrate teeth on the margins.
The genus name Scutellaria derives from the Latin “scutell(a)” meaning “a dish” in reference to the expanded fruiting calyx.
The species epithet serrata derives from the Latin “serr(at)” meaning “a saw” referring to the large teeth of the leaves.
