Origin – Native to North America.

Other information – This species is rare in Alabama and has been reported from just two central counties. The plant can be identified by its pubescent stems, broad leaves, and large inflorescences of purple flowers.
The genus name Verbena is of an obscure derivation but is used to describe any plant used as a healing or sacred herb. The stems of Verbenas were made into wreaths for ritual and healing.
The species epithet “stricta” derives from the Latin “strict” meaning “tight, drawn together” referring to the stems and leaves.
