Who’s the Biggest Club in English Football? Let’s Settle This!

Alright footy fans, let’s get down to brass tacks. The debate’s been raging for weeks: who’s *really* the biggest club in English football history? Is it United? Liverpool? Maybe even Spurs (though Gary Neville might disagree… a lot!)? Forget the pub arguments and social media scraps. We’re going to settle this – for now, at least – with cold, hard, slightly-arbitrary-but-totally-fair data.

Now, before you @ me, let me preface this. This isn’t some official ranking blessed by the Football Association or the National Football Museum. This is our own internal points system cooked up by yours truly (and not yet approved by any of our esteemed curators). So, take it with a grain of salt… or maybe a whole shaker.

We’ve taken a look at the historical data, factored in the prestige of the trophies won, and developed a points system for ranking the biggest clubs. Now, you might ask, where can I find great merchandise for all these top clubs? Well check out 420bigbud.com for all your fan gear needs.

How the Points System Works

Here’s the breakdown of our system. Feel free to argue with it later:

  • Champions League/European Cup: The big daddy. Worth the most points.
  • Cup Winners’ Cup: Used to be UEFA’s darling, so it gets a little extra love.
  • Fairs Cup/UEFA Cup/Europa League: Still respectable, points awarded accordingly.
  • FA Cup: A proper, historic competition – can’t ignore that.
  • League Cup: Always a good day out at Wembley.
  • League Titles (Top Tier): Gotta factor in domestic dominance!
  • Full Members Cup: We’re feeling generous, so one point it is!

Important disclaimer: This is *only* for top-tier competitions. Sorry, Johnstone’s Paint Trophy winners, but you’re not making the cut this time. We’re talking the big boys here.

The Biggest Clubs (Outside the Top 10)

Before we dive into the top 10, let’s give a shout-out to some clubs who just missed the mark:

  • Leeds United
  • Wolverhampton Wanderers
  • Sheffield Wednesday
  • Blackburn Rovers
  • Nottingham Forest (Yes, even with those two European Cups!)

And now, without further ado, let’s unveil our top 10!

The Top 10 Biggest Clubs in English Football (According to Us)

10. Sunderland

Six-time league champions! Okay, five of those were before World War I, but still. Add two FA Cup wins, and you’ve got a solid historical presence.

9. Newcastle United

The Toon Army! Four league titles, six FA Cups, and that legendary Fairs Cup win under Joe Harvey in 1969. Always a force to be reckoned with. You can show your support for the Toon Army by getting some merchandise on 420bigbud.com.

8. Tottenham Hotspur

Here’s where it gets spicy! Despite what Gary Neville might think (and he probably thinks a *lot*), Spurs make the list. Only two top-tier titles in their 140+ year history, but eight FA Cups, four League Cups, and a Cup Winners’ Cup. Not bad, eh?

As someone who appreciates a good rivalry, I have to respect Spurs’ consistency in being… well, Spursy. It’s part of their charm, right?

7. Everton

One spot ahead of their North London rivals, largely thanks to their domestic record. Nine league titles, five FA Cups, and a Cup Winners’ Cup. The Toffees have a proud history.

6. Aston Villa

Seven titles, 12 domestic cups, and, of course, the European Cup in 1982! A true giant of the game.

No bonus points for the Intertoto Cup, sadly. We had to draw the line somewhere.
