Origin – Native to North America.

Other information – This interesting species can be found in southern Alabama. The plant is easy to identify becasue of its red roots, iris-like basal leaves, pubescent scapes, and grayish inflorescences.
The genus name Lachnanthes derives from the Greek “lachn” meaning “woolly” and “anth(e)” meaning “a flower” referring to the grayish-hairy flowers.
The species epithet caroliana means “of Carolina” because the plant’s occurrence there also.
