What soil is good for growing Cannabis?

The 3 key things you want from soil that will ensure you grow healthy plants are: decent texture; good drainage; and water retention. Without a loose enough texture, your plants won’t be able to develop strong roots. Without good drainage, you will end up over watering your plants and starving them of oxygen, causing them to wilt. And, conversely, without good water retention, your roots will dry out quickly and become damaged.

A good soil will usually look nice and dark, like used coffee grounds and a loose but sandy texture that will help it retain enough water without suffocating the plant of oxygen, as a soil full of clay or packed mud balls from the garden would do. More specifically, you will need to pick a soil suitable for your cannabis strain, as some auto-flowering strains will need a different recipe all-together in comparison to their photo-period counterparts.

What makes the best soil mix for weed?

If you are growing auto-flowering strains, then you will want soil that is not heavily fertilized. It is also a good idea to mix 50% soil with a combination of 50% of coco coir (made from coconut husks – helps with water retention) and a peat-based soil with plenty of perlite (light and airy rocks – helps with drainage) to ensure good drainage. You also want to take it steady with fertilizers in the early stages whatever the strain, give your seedlings some time to grow first.

  2. For the MG potting mix what would you recommended for fertilizers for the difference stages of growth? Doesn’t it have “slow” release so might “dangerous” to add more fert?

    JimFebruary 28th, 2019
    • It is not dangerous at all Jim, its ok to mix with MG!

      Admin2May 26th, 2019
    • Hey Jim, make sure not to add to much Fert; but it cannot harm the weed/hemp plant, no worries there.

      Admin2May 26th, 2019
      • Just have to make sure you stop adding any nutrients 2 weeks before harvest and water heavily the last two weeks.

  3. Would I want the miracle grow for an auto white widow? I read that auto strains don’t want a lot of fertilizer already mixed into their soil. I’m a first time grower, growing indoors in a smart pot. And I plan on watering with distilled water, just in case.

    ShaylaMarch 27th, 2019
    • You need the miracle grow for auto white widow;)

      Admin2May 26th, 2019
      • Absolutely not. I have no idea who wrote this but the last thing you want for an Auto is this soil…use coco or a soil with absolutely ZERO nutrients already in it….

        PrometheusJune 10th, 2019
        • Do not use Miracle Grow for Cannabis! The best for house plants.

          DAVID S GRAVESJuly 9th, 2019
        • miracle grow uses time release fertilizers. these are released every time you water which would be daily if growing indoors . this will over fertilize your plants in no time and then you’ll have a situation that gets worse when its time to flower as the soil will be loaded with the wrong fertilizer for that period. then comes harvest time and your plants are still feeding on time release fertilizer and flushing will likely make it worse. best not to use any time release fertilizer as its just not suitable for growing healthy cannabis.

  4. Great job recommending miracle grow even when it’s proven to KILL cannabis, or “weed plants” as a ten year old would call it. Maybe spend more than 10 minutes on google before you believe you’re actually qualified to give advice in other people’s “weed gardens.”

    ScottMay 17th, 2019
    • I began my grow with the miracle grow potting soil is there anything I can do to save the situation now? On about week 6

    • Glad I read these comments before I start anything And went with MG which would have been a choice just because it’s a known name smh

  5. i hope if you read this don’t use merical grow on your plants it will kill them off there’s a certain chemical doesn’t mix with thc

    paytonFebruary 22nd, 2020
  6. You can use miracle grow if it’s one of the organic miracle grows, but yeah do not use their regular miracle with synthetic slow release fertilizer.

    MikeApril 29th, 2020
  7. I’ve used Fox Farm in 3 different grows, it’s never at the right PH, it’s always HOT. I would never try to start a seed in fox farm. Miracle Grow might be good for rose bushes, but it’s awful for marijuana.

    bobJuly 6th, 2020
  8. You put miracle grow on this list. Never write another article in your entire life again you hack frauds. Delete this entire webpage.

  9. Nice list, check out my super soil folks, I think it will compete very well.
